Frequently Asked Questions
I’ve had FND for years, can this still help me?
1
Yes. TMS enhanced treatment can be effective for people who have had FND symptoms for many years, even decades.
What about other symptoms?
2
People we treat often have other functional symptoms such as:
Sensory loss
Dissociative or seizure-like episodes
Pain
Fatigue
Difficulty finding their words
They typically report that these symptoms resolve as well, once their movement system is reset.
How can it work so quickly?
3
FND is a problem with the way areas of the brain talk to each other, and to the body. There are no diseased or missing cells, so there’s no time needed for tissues to heal.
Instead, communication between areas of the brain and the body needs to be reset. This can be done in one session, because the system hasn’t “forgotten” anything, and can quickly return to normal function.
Side effects are very rare. Treatment includes transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) which can cause mild, transient headaches in a small number of people. There is an extremely small risk of seizure from TMS. Our team will go through a safety checklist with you to check that TMS is safe for you.
Treatment involves accessing normal movement of the arms and legs again. Some people report mild, transient muscle soreness the day after treatment. This is the same as what you might feel after a gym workout.

What are the risks?
Will I have to keep doing exercises at home afterwards?
5
Most people don’t need any specific exercises for their FND symptoms, because they no longer have them. Instead, most people benefit from a structured plan to improve their general fitness.
We provide you with strategies for returning to the activities that are important to you, and support you with follow-up appointments to address any questions that might come up.
We are working to get TMS-enhanced treatment integrated with the public health system. Until then, we are able to offer treatment on a fee-for-service basis.
