RISE-FND - Recruiting now!
Starting January 2027
This phase 3 randomised clinical trial is currently seeking people with a diagnosis of FND who have difficulty walking. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two groups: TMS-enhanced treatment or the current gold-standard treatment of specialist FND physiotherapy and occupational therapy. Reimbursement is available for participants travelling within New Zealand.
This study is supported by a generous donation from the Freemason’s Foundation of New Zealand.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation as a primer for rapid improvement in functional neurological disorder: a case series
7 July 2025
This peer-reviewed journal article reports the results from the first 3 FND patients we treated using TMS-enhanced treatment. One patient used a power wheelchair for mobility for 4 years before treatment.
All 3 patients returned to independent walking by the end of the treatment, and remained independent at least 3 months post-treatment.
STEP-FMD
We are currently completing a phase 2a trial evaluating TMS-enhanced treatment to restore walking independence in 30 people with FND. The trial is supported by the Health Research Council of New Zealand. You can find more information on the Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry.
All of the places in the study have been filled, and we are completing treatment and follow-up sessions.
Stay tuned for the final results!
